Red Sox ace Sale goes back on DL

BOSTON (AP) The Boston Red Sox have returned ace Chris Sale to the 10-day disabled list after just one healthy start.

The left-hander was already on the DL with left shoulder inflammation once this month. He was activated against the Orioles on Sunday and struck out 12 batters in five innings. He is 12-4 with a 1.97 ERA.

But with Boston cruising to a big lead in the AL East, Sale will get some rest for what the team hopes will be a long playoff run.

Stanton's HR, Severino's 8 Ks lift Yanks

NEW YORK (AP) Giancarlo Stanton hit one of New York's four homers, Luis Severino struck out eight in five innings and the Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 11-6 on Saturday.

Didi Gregorius, Miguel Andujar and Greg Bird also connected as New York moved 31 games over .500, matching a season high. Andujar had three hits and three RBIs, and Gregorius also drove in three runs.

Keuchel looks to keep A's out of 1st

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Houston Astros will turn to their hottest pitcher, left-hander Dallas Keuchel, when the Oakland Athletics make a bid to move into a tie for first place in the American League West on Saturday afternoon.

On Friday night, Oakland's Nick Martini tied the game with a ninth-inning double and Matt Olson won it with a leadoff home run in the 10th, allowing the A's (73-49) to move within one game of the Astros (74-48) atop the West with a 4-3 triumph.

Jeter absent as Yanks celebrate '98 team

NEW YORK (AP) Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada returned to the Bronx on Saturday for the New York Yankees' celebration of their 1998 World Series championship team.

Darryl Strawberry and former manager Joe Torre also attended the ceremony before New York's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Derek Jeter did not make the trip because of his daughter Bella's first birthday, but sent a video message for the fans.

Giants P Strickland comes off 60-day DL

CINCINNATI (AP) The San Francisco Giants have activated reliever Hunter Strickland from the 60-day disabled list.

Strickland broke his pinkie finger on his right hand when he punched a door in frustration after a blown save against Miami on June 18. He is 3-3 with a 2.84 ERA and 13 saves in 34 games.

Bauer has leg fracture, out 4-6 weeks

CLEVELAND (AP) Trevor Bauer isn't going to let a stress fracture in his right leg get in the way of throwing a baseball.

Cleveland's right-hander, one of the leading candidates for the AL Cy Young Award, will be out four to six weeks with the injury, but that's not stopping him from keeping his arm in shape.

Scherzer goes 6 scoreless, 1st to win 16

WASHINGTON (AP) Max Scherzer is using all his tools to help keep the Nationals' playoff hopes alive.

Scherzer pitched six scoreless innings, doubled and scored twice as the Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 8-2 on Friday night for his major league-leading 16th win.

PITTSBURGH (AP) Cubs starter Cole Hamels didn't have his best stuff Friday night. Luckily, he had a few buddies on hand to help him out.

Machado hits 2 HRs, Dodgers rip Mariners

SEATTLE (AP) For a welcome change, the Los Angeles Dodgers made the job easy for manager Dave Roberts after a stretch of close games and debatable moves.

Manny Machado hit two of Los Angeles' five home runs, Walker Buehler allowed one run in six innings, and the Dodgers routed the Seattle Mariners 11-1 to open a key three-game series on Friday night.
