NEW YORK (AP) Aroldis Chapman got Albert Pujols to swing over a slider in the dirt, and the New York Yankees jogged to the infield to exchange handshakes and hugs after clinching their first AL East title since 2012.

No wild celebration, not this year.

Hours after the startling news that pitcher Domingo German was placed on administrative leave under Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy, the homer-happy Yankees routed the Los Angeles Angels 9-1 Thursday night to wrap up first place and breeze to their 100th win.

P Germán on leave for domestic violence

NEW YORK (AP) Yankees star pitcher Domingo German was placed on administrative leave under Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy on Thursday, casting doubt over whether New York's top winner this season will be available for the playoffs.

Manager Aaron Boone was informed of the decision while he was driving to Yankee Stadium for a game against the Los Angeles Angels. New York won 9-1 to clinch its first AL East title since 2012.

Marlins' Mattingly agrees to extension

MIAMI (AP) Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly has agreed to a contract extension and will return for a fifth season in 2020, a person familiar with the negotiations said Thursday.

The person confirmed the agreement to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Marlins hadn't announced the deal. A news conference with CEO Derek Jeter was scheduled for Friday.

MILWAUKEE (AP) Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Lorenzo Cain has had his share of aches and pains this season. He managed to do some damage to the San Diego Padres before departing with another ailment.

Cain hit a solo home run to help lift the Brewers past the Padres 5-1 on Thursday before exiting the game with a sore left ankle.

P Betances told surgery not recommended

NEW YORK (AP) Yankees reliever Dellin Betances has been told surgery is not recommended for the partially torn Achilles tendon that ended his season after eight pitches.

Betances received a second opinion from Dr. Martin O'Malley of the Hospital for Special Surgery, who concurred with Dr. Justin Greisberg of New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Dodgers' add two to ownership group

LOS ANGELES (AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers' ownership group is expanding with the addition of two businessmen described as lifelong fans of the team.

Chairman and owner Mark Walter on Thursday announced Robert L. Plummer and Alan Smolinisky have joined the group.
