Michigan aims to cap big week with title

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) No. 18 Michigan looks to close out a big week with a tournament trophy when it faces Providence for the championship of the Air Force Reserve Tip-Off Tournament.

The Wolverines, who beat No. 8 Villanova on the road Wednesday, followed that up with an 84-61 victory Saturday over George Washington in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame's annual in-season tournament.

Michigan (4-0) will be playing what amounts to a road game Sunday at the Mohegan Sun arena in Connecticut, which is about 60 miles from the Friars' campus in Providence.


Hokies, Purdue meet for Charleston final

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) No. 16 Virginia Tech will take on No. 23 Purdue for the championship at the Charleston Classic on Sunday night.

The Hokies (3-0) are playing for their first in-season tournament title in coach Buzz Williams' five seasons.


No. 12 Kansas State set to face Penn

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) The Paradise Jam resumes Sunday with four teams playing to reach the championship game.

Oregon State meets Missouri in the day's first semifinal. Then, Penn faces No. 12 Kansas State. The winners advance to Monday's title game.


UCF, WKU play in Myrtle Beach final

CONWAY, S.C. (AP) UCF and Western Kentucky will play for the championship on the final day of the Myrtle Beach Invitational.

The tournament resumes Sunday with four games after a one-day break. The last game features UCF and Western Kentucky after the teams' semifinal wins Friday.


Furman stuns No. 8 Villanova 76-68 in OT

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) First, it was Loyola. Next came Villanova.

One by one, Furman is picking off teams from last year's Final Four and proving to be the surprise story of the first month of the college basketball season.


No. 24 Marquette rallies by Presbyterian

MILWAUKEE (AP) Graduate transfer Joseph Chartouny picked a good time to make his presence felt at Marquette.

Sam Hauser scored 19 points and Chartouny added 16 off the bench as the No. 24 Golden Eagles overcame a sluggish start to pull away for a 74-55 nonconference victory over stubborn Presbyterian on Saturday.


Friars beat S. Carolina in Tip-Off semi

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) - David Duke scored 20 points to rally Providence to a 76-65 win over South Carolina and into the finals of the Air Force Reserve Tip-Off tournament on Saturday.

Alpha Diallo added 17 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for the Friars (3-1).


Gibbs, Harvey key Irish win over Tribe

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) Coach Mike Brey believes Notre Dame has its point guard in Prentiss Hubb.

"I can't thank (Hubb) enough for being aggressive and helping me get into a flow," said T.J. Gibbs, who scored 18 points to lead four Irish players in double figures. "It starts with him."


NC State routs Maine, improves to 4-0

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) North Carolina State big man Wyatt Walker figures the Wolfpack's start has been about "playing against the game of basketball" to prepare the team for tougher games ahead.

That's probably the only way to look at it, considering the overmatched opponents on the schedule so far are doing little to make the Wolfpack even a little uncomfortable.


Miami fights off Bethune Cookman 78-70

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) After two blowout wins to start the season, Miami finally overcame a difficult test.

Chris Lykes scored 21 points as the Hurricanes fought off Bethune Cookman for a 78-70 victory Saturday afternoon.
